Education Fund

The Education Fund fosters world-class talent among trainees and clinical research fellows, driving projects that target the causes and progression of heart failure and accelerate innovation, through annual competitive awards across our three partner institutions.

Before You Apply

Eligibility

  • Project Eligibility

The proposed project must focus on an aspect of heart failure, broadly interpreted to include fields such as science, medicine, nursing, engineering, data science, and public health.

It must involve collaboration between at least two of our three partner organizations – UHN, SickKids, and U of T – and include a clear plan for translating research findings into practice or commercializing them.

Upon completion of the funding period, trainees must submit an end-of-term report, write a one-page letter of thanks to the Rogers family describing their research, and meet with the Translation & Commercialization Committee to discuss the project’s real-world potential.

  • Candidate Eligibility

Applicants must be full-time doctoral or post-doctoral researchers residing in Canada at the time of receiving the award, and must be supervised by a full-time faculty member or researcher at one of our three partner institutions: UHN, SickKids, and U of T (including any U of T-affiliated teaching hospitals).

Trainees with co-supervisors from different partner institutions and/or disciplines may be scored more favourably, since this demonstrates a greater degree of collaboration.

For Post-doctoral Researcher applicants only, those with a PhD must be within five years of PhD completion, though exceptions may be possible for postdoctoral fellows with clinical training extending beyond five years post-MD.

  • Supervisor Rules

A Supervisor or Principal Investigator may have up to one trainee funded through this program per award level, meaning one PhD and one Post-doctoral Researcher trainee, across both new and renewed applicants.

A supervisor may also be named as a collaborator on more than one application submitted in the same cycle, supporting the Centre’s emphasis on cross-institutional collaboration.

  • PhD Renewal Candidate Eligibility

    Grant renewals are not guaranteed.

PhD renewal applicants must complete an abbreviated application, assessed separately from new applications, based on the progress demonstrated during their first year of funding and their research goals for the following year.

Renewal applicants must also apply for at least one other peer-reviewed funding source in the same cycle, such as OGS, CGS, or another peer-reviewed institutional grant.

Post-doctoral Researcher renewal applicants follow a different process, completing a full application alongside an additional question on progress made during their first year of funding, and are scored alongside new applicants rather than separately.

Criteria & Evaluation

Evaluation Criteria & Application Requirements

Applications are evaluated on applicant excellence, project rationale, research plan, organizational alignment, collaboration, translation potential, and inclusion. Review the full scoring breakdown before you apply.
Application Process

Application Process in 3 Steps

The application process takes 4 to 6 weeks from supervisor confirmation to submission. Plan ahead.
The online application form can be accessed below.
Please direct any questions you may have to Lisa Hoang (Coordinator, Planning & Operations).

Step 1 – Confirm a TRCHR-Affiliated Supervisor

Step 2 – Prepare Your Application Package

To assist you in completing your application, feel free to watch our workshop “Writing a Strong Grant Application”, led by a panel of former Education Fund reviewers.

While the workshop content is helpful, please note that funding amounts and criteria weighting in the video have since changed. Please refer to the 2026/27 Education Fund notice for the most up to date details.

Step 3 – Submit by the deadline

Please submit your completed PhD/PDR application and associated documents before the due date indicated.
Incomplete or late applications will not be accepted.

A panel of Ted Rogers Centre for Heart Research investigators will review and adjudicate all applications.
