Overview

Christoph Haller is a Cardiovascular Surgeon in the Division of Cardiovascular Surgery at SickKids and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto. His practice is focused on open heart surgery in neonates and infants, covering the spectrum of congenital heart disease from single ventricle palliation to mechanical support and heart transplantation. He has established the Minimally Invasive Congenital Heart Surgery Program at SickKids for a wide variety of congenital lesions in patients of all ages from infants to adults. Dr. Haller’s research focuses on the regeneration of cardiac function in pediatric patients using human pluripotent stem cells. He is developing an artificial placenta system to sustain fetal physiology ex utero, reduce mortality of prematurity, and to make fetuses more accessible to early intervention. He is investigating strategies to mitigate the impact of cardiopulmonary bypass, selective cerebral perfusion, and deep hypothermic arrest on the brain. He trained at Albert-Ludwigs University Freiburg and completed cardiac surgery training in Germany before subspecializing in congenital heart surgery through fellowships at SickKids and the University of Toronto. Collaborators would find his combination of active surgical practice with a deep understanding of translational experimental animal research particularly relevant for projects bridging clinical congenital heart surgery with preclinical research.
